Screening Is Not Diagnosis
Developmental and autism-specific screening tools identify children who may need additional evaluation. A positive screen does not establish an autism diagnosis.
Examples Clinicians May Encounter
- M-CHAT-R/F: autism-specific screening for toddlers within its validated age range
- Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ): broad developmental screening
- STAT: interactive autism screening tool used by trained professionals
- CARS-2: clinician rating instrument that may contribute to diagnostic evaluation
- ADOS-2: standardized observational assessment used as one component of a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation
Clinical Use
Tool selection, administration, scoring, and interpretation should follow current publisher requirements, professional scope, and applicable clinical standards.
Referral After Concern
When screening or surveillance identifies concern, families may need comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and/or other developmental services. ABA referral typically follows an established diagnosis when required by the payer.
