Describe, Don’t Label
Use observable descriptions rather than labels such as ‘defiant’ or ‘attention-seeking.’ Describe what happened, when, and under what conditions.
ABC Observation
Antecedent: what happened immediately before. Behavior: what the student did in observable terms. Consequence: what happened immediately after.
Look for Patterns
- Specific tasks or settings
- Transitions
- Attention from adults or peers
- Access to preferred items or activities
- Sensory conditions
- Communication demands
- Fatigue, illness, hunger, or other setting events
Teach Alternatives
When a behavior serves a function, effective support often includes teaching a safer or more efficient way to meet the same need.
When to Seek Support
Follow school procedures and involve qualified behavior, special-education, mental-health, or medical professionals when behavior is persistent, complex, or creates safety concerns.
Next Step
Use objective classroom data and collaborate with the student’s team.
