Start With Consent and School Policy
Information sharing and participation should follow parent authorization, FERPA/HIPAA requirements as applicable, and district procedures.
Useful Collaboration
- Share relevant goals and strategies
- Discuss what is working across settings
- Clarify terminology
- Coordinate transitions or safety plans
- Avoid unnecessary duplication
- Identify conflicting recommendations early
Different Roles
School teams make educational decisions. Outside clinicians make treatment decisions within their scope. Collaboration works best when each party respects those roles.
Keep Goals Functional
Focus on skills and outcomes that matter to the student rather than making every environment identical.
Communication
Use objective, respectful language and document agreed action items.
Next Step
Families may invite individuals with knowledge or special expertise regarding the child to an IEP meeting consistent with IDEA procedures.
