What Happens After Referral

2. Intake Package

The family completes required intake information.

3. Verification of Benefits & Initial Assessment Authorization

Insurance benefits and payer requirements are reviewed.

4. Initial Assessment & Treatment Plan

A BCBA evaluates relevant needs and develops individualized recommendations.

5. Treatment Authorization

Authorization is requested when required by the payer.

6. Begin 1-on-1 ABA

Services begin after authorization and staffing are in place.

Ongoing Coordination

Caregiver training, BCBA oversight, progress review, and interdisciplinary collaboration occur throughout treatment as clinically appropriate.

My child was just diagnosed with autism. What do I do next?

Families often have many questions after diagnosis. Helpful next steps may include reviewing the evaluation, asking what recommendations mean, learning what insurance requires, exploring school or early-intervention supports, and identifying services that match the child’s individual needs.

What are the early signs of autism?

Limited or inconsistent response to name
Delays or differences in gestures, babbling, words, or conversation
Differences in eye contact or shared attention
Repetitive movements or highly focused interests
Strong distress with changes in routine
Sensory sensitivities or unusual sensory-seeking patterns
Loss of previously acquired language or social skills

Developmental screening helps identify whether a child may benefit from additional evaluation. Screening is not the same as diagnosis. A diagnostic evaluation considers developmental history, caregiver information, direct observation, and other clinical information.

What is ABA therapy and how does it help?

How do I know which treatment is right for my child?

Autism is heterogeneous, and outcomes vary. Be cautious of products or interventions that promise dramatic or universal results, rely mainly on testimonials, or discourage discussion with qualified healthcare professionals.

Bring articles, videos, or treatment claims to your child’s healthcare or clinical team. Ask what is known, what is uncertain, what risks exist, and how the information applies to your child’s individual situation.

What is the difference between an IEP and a 504 Plan?

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for eligible students who require special education.
