What a BCBA Is
The BCBA is a graduate-level certification. BCBAs may practice independently within behavior analysis and may supervise RBTs, BCaBAs, and other professionals implementing behavior-analytic interventions.
Core Requirements
BCBA certification requires qualifying graduate education, behavior-analytic content, supervised fieldwork, and successful completion of the certification examination. The exact pathway depends on the BACB requirements in effect when the person applies.
Transition Ahead
The BACB has published updated BCBA eligibility requirements that take effect in 2027. Students planning coursework or fieldwork across the transition should review the current BCBA Handbook and transition guidance carefully.
Fieldwork
Supervised fieldwork must meet BACB documentation, supervisor, contact, and experience requirements. Do not rely on informal estimates or outdated hour summaries.
Licensure
Some jurisdictions also regulate behavior analysts through state licensure or other requirements. Certification and licensure are separate considerations.
Important Note
Requirements change; this resource intentionally avoids presenting a static pathway as permanent.
Next Step
Use the current BACB BCBA Handbook and applicable state licensing resources when planning your pathway.
