Inclusion Is More Than Admission
A program can be technically open to everyone while still being difficult to access. Inclusion considers communication, sensory environment, flexibility, staff preparation, physical access, and how families request support.
Program Design
- Provide clear descriptions of what participants can expect
- Offer flexible participation when possible
- Use visual or written instructions
- Identify a lower-stimulation space
- Ask families what supports are helpful
- Train staff to respond respectfully to communication and behavior differences
Staff Preparation
Give staff a simple plan for who to contact, how to respond to distress, and how to make reasonable adjustments within the program’s capabilities.
Ask, Don’t Assume
Families and participants are often the best source of information about what will make participation successful.
Review and Improve
Gather feedback after programs and use it to improve future events.
