Assume Communication Is Meaningful
Students may communicate through speech, gestures, signs, pictures, AAC devices, behavior, writing, or combinations of methods.
Classroom Strategies
- Use clear language
- Allow processing time
- Offer meaningful choices
- Use visuals when helpful
- Model rather than repeatedly quiz
- Check understanding
- Keep AAC available and accessible
AAC
Augmentative and alternative communication is a valid form of communication. Do not remove a student’s communication system as punishment or require speech before honoring an appropriate AAC request.
Reduce Communication Pressure
Give students time to respond and avoid demanding eye contact as proof of listening.
Collaborate
Follow the student’s communication plan and coordinate with speech-language and educational team members.
Next Step
Use communication supports consistently across relevant school routines.
